Although learning a choreography is always fun, and makes it easy to showcase the movements learned,
traditionally belly dance is improvised and not rehearsed / choreographed. Improvisation is a unique skill,
which is best learned early on.
It consists of
- the knowledge of basic belly dance movements and their combinations
- smooth transition between the moves
- the ability to hear the beat and instantly moving to it
- learning which move(s) would fit best certain instruments, sections
- the ability to think ahead which movement should continue, while not knowing how the music will change
(of course this is not a complete list)

It is not as complicated as it sounds - we all have improvisational skills in us, however, it can be challenging: if the
dancer always learns a choreography and relies on it to move and then tries to switch to improvisation.

With improvisation
- you are able to express yourself through your dance. (Your dance shows how you feel and hear the music, not the
way your teacher felt at the moment she created the choreography)
- You are able to dance to any music. You are not limited to one song and one choreography
- Because you are not forced to try to remember every single movement in order, and you are not stressed out about
what happens if you forget a step, you are more relaxed, you are having much more fun and your face really, truly
shows it!
- you can always learn a choreography

Have you seen a dancer with a blank face, or looking like she’s concentrating really hard? She was counting the beats
and was trying to remember her steps! Compare that to a dancer who looks like she’s having a lot of fun, she is able
to make eye contact with you, smile at you and still dance beautifully!

"Your mind is like a diamond - the more you polish it the better it shines".

"To become your personal best at what you do you should never stop learning ! This applies to everything in life - but if one of  your goals is to become a
good dancer then this includes: trying classes and workshops from different teachers, search for knowledge on your own (library, internet, other
knowledgeable dancers, performers;  watch performance and instructional videos) and do whatever you can to widen your horizon. You may want to enroll
in a cross cultural (Middle Eastern) class in college, or take some drumming classes, ballet, yoga even modern  or ballroom dance  - any other type of
dance form will help you obtain better posture and better understanding of the dance form.

Knowledge comes from a variety of sources: I learn from my students as well as from the audience members, or other fellow dancers.  My students help me
become a better teacher, and feedback / compliments / reaction from the audience during my performances make me a better dancer.  You must always
ask yourself: how can I become better? What can I improve? There is so much to learn and we must strive to advance to the next level. There is always a
next level. No one is ever finished with anything.

I have continuously taken classes in the past 5 years
- College level semester length classes: Modern dance, Stretching and Alignment Class (Grossmont College),
- Master Classes: Flamenco and Hatha Yoga (Grossmont College),
- ongoing Bikram's Yoga and ballet;
- private belly dance classes: over 3 years of classes with Bahira,  9 months with David, and currently with Angelika Nemeth
- group classes: Jim Boz, Lucia and David
- workshops: locally and internationally recognized teachers such as Tito (Egypt),
Aziza, David, Oreet, Angelika Nemeth, Sabrina Fox  and Dondi"
